Sphere

Las Vegas, NV • Ongoing

What began as a concept drawing of a stick figure in the middle of a circle has materialized into something straight out of science fiction—the world’s biggest spherical structure, with the highest resolution LED screen and largest beamforming audio system on the planet. With a capacity of 20,000, Sphere represents James Dolan’s vision of the future of immersive entertainment and what he calls “a new medium.”

In a city known for being larger than life, one venue manages to literally outshine its competition: Sphere, Las Vegas’s newest landmark.

Sphere’s shape is not only eye-catching—its exterior, studded with 1.23 million LEDs, is visible from space—but also lends itself to a unique and specific experience for audiences within: the sensation of complete visual immersion. An extremely high-definition (16,000 x 16,000 pixels, to be precise) image extends uninterrupted into viewers’ peripheral vision to elicit a feeling akin to being in virtual reality—but without the headset, and for thousands of people at once. Going beyond sight, Sphere features the world’s largest array of loudspeakers with the ability to aim sound at each of the 18,600 seats, giving it incredible capacity for audio personalization down to the individual. Scent cannons, wind simulators, and haptic seats also expand Sphere’s potential sensory palette far beyond that of a traditional arena.

The creation of such a uniquely immersive venue calls for uniquely immersive content. Several acclaimed musical acts have already answered that call: U2, Phish, Dead & Company, and the Eagles have performed at Sphere, accompanied by spectacular visuals both pre-generated and rendered in real time that take advantage of its distinctive setup and size to dazzling effect. But the venue’s most notable success so far has been the reimagined Wizard of Oz, which debuted on August 28, 2025. This latest experience takes the classic 1939 film and expands it to fit Sphere’s distinctive proportions with the help of CGI, artificial intelligence, and an army of visual artists. It also adds a 4-dimensional element with indoor windstorms, vibrating seats, and even physical props, among other surprises. The opportunity to see this beloved film in an entirely new way has proven to be an attractive one: A mere three months after opening, the show had already sold over a million tickets, generating more than $130 million in sales.

With owner and operator Sphere Entertainment Co’s plans to build Spheres in cities around the globe, Las Vegas’s Sphere may prove to be the progenitor of a new kind of high-quality, high-capacity immersive entertainment venue that will allow storytellers and artists to extend their craft to new heights of multi-sensoriality and scale.
